New Zealand has a wealth of unique places to stay. These range from home and farmstays, to self-contained cottages, lodges, boutique hotels and some excellent, more-established hotels. There is something for everyone. Below, we have outlined the different categories of lodgings available.
The list of recommended accomodation features an approximate price guide. A tick next to any of these price guides means that btb has visited the lodging displayed and are particularly proud to feature them on our site.
Fine Hotels - a selection of more traditional established hotels that stand out for their locations, service, cuisine and overall experience.
Boutique Hotels - smaller intimate hotels often with an emphasis on contemporary design & architecture that stand out from the crowd.
Hosted Guesthouses and B&Bs - these character inns and places to stay are all about warmth and hospitality of fine hosts in the regions they love. This category is broad ranging from farm & homestays to B&Bs.
Lodges & Retreats - as a rule , lodges and retreats are luxurious, often boasting stunning natural settings. They range from character properties, such as tree huts, to exclusive, finely decorated hideaways.
Cottages & 'the bach' - the bach, a beach house or holiday home, is a New Zealand icon and just perfect for getting away from it all. Generally self contained, but sometimes with breakfast as an option, cottages & baches are great for holing up for a few days or longer if you've got the time. Both traditional and contemporary, they tend to reflect New Zealanders and their culture.

Out of the Ordinary - some accomodation simply stands out due to something extraordinary. It might be location, cuisine or some other special feature. You want to bathe under the stars in the middle of a lavendar farm? We've got just the place.
